Get over there!

I was kind of surprised that more people didn't guess to whom Clare was taking them to ask about the moon. Unless it was so obvious that nobody found it even worth mentioning? I mean, someone who Clare is acquainted with who knows a lot of obscure secrets and who lives under the ground? How many candidates could there be? XD I guess I should be happy that people aren't guessing the entire plotline in advance…

Sorry about that. As I said before, update days will have to remain somewhat flexible until the end of the month or so. (Not that I was ever very punctual before, either.) Next update should be around Saturday, I think.

If you find the comic rather confusing at this point, I'm afraid it's likely to get even more confusing. :( It might help if take the opportunity to reread the story of The Girl Without Hands.

Get over there!

I normally hate updating with just a title page, but that's all I was able to finish for this week. Since it's not a particularly exciting image in itself, I figured I'd go a little crazy and paint it with watercolor instead of cg. I think it turned out all right, considering; I should probably try to practice watercolor more often. You can see a slightly larger version with no text or Photoshop tweakings here.

Next update will probably be on Saturday, May 5.

Chapter 4, pages 1 & 2

April 20th, 2007

Get over there!

Missed it by several hours, but April 20 was actually the comic's 4th anniversary. (I'm going to be so old when this thing is finished.) And so we begin Chapter 4. The bottom half of page 2 turned out to be quite unlucky. First, it was the victim of a vicious feline attack, and had to be drawn on a seperate piece of paper. Then, I had to draw and redraw that hand in the third panel about 5 times, and I still hate it. Even the dialogue gave me trouble. All in all, not a very auspicious start, but I hope to do better once I get back in stride.

Now, I'm very excited about going back to regular updates on the comic. However, among other things, it seems my thesis work is not actually done until sometime next month. So, while my goal is to update once every week, the update day may fluctuate. Please bear with me for now. Next update will be Friday or Saturday.

2nd Interlude, pages 8, 9, 10, 11 | 2 fanart

Get over there!

Astute readers will probably be able to guess what childhood trauma inspired the name of the horse. ^^ And with that, the 2nd Interlude is done. Somehow I get the feeling it would have been a lot better if it hadn't taken five months to finish. It feels like it's been forever since I've worked on the main comic, and I really miss it. I'm going to go ahead and set my deadline for the start of Chapter 4: April 20.

In a rather shocking turn of events, No Rest actually won the WCCA for Outstanding Fantasy Comic! My jaw kind of hit the floor when I found out; I never expected to actually win, not in a million years. I'd like to thank all my readers, I could never have done it without you, and, uh… *orchestra butts in*

Also, I was interviewed by T Campbell at Broken Frontier. An audio interview. So far I haven't had the guts to listen to it myself — when I get nervous, it generally results in either a) long, awkward silence, or b) erratic babbling, and I think I somehow managed both of these in the space of a single interview. But the morbidly curious among you might be interested, and you might want to check out some of his other interviews with webcomic artists.

Get over there!

A lot of stuff has been going on. As you might notice over on the left, aside from the Italian translation by Franco Bonalumi, the comic now has a German translation by Katharina Kolata, and a Japanese translation by Kaoru Nagatomo.

I've finally updated the backlog of fan stuff, including some amazing cosplay pictures that you should definitely check out. I'm sorry it's taken so long for me to put these up and to respond to emails.

Also, the Webcartoonist Choice Awards have started up again, and somehow or other No Rest has managed a nod for Outstanding Fantasy Comic, so big thanks to all the voters. “It's an honor just to be nominated” sounds like such a cliche, but I definitely mean it. ^_^ A lot of excellent contenders this year; congrats especially to Golden girls Komiyan and Keffria for multiple nominations!

And in the spirit of recognizing quality webcomics, I decided I had better get off my butt and finish revamping the links page already. Unfortunately, it isn't actually finished. -__- I was going insane from filling in all the little descriptions and trying to arrange everything by genre; so I decided that rather than continue to put it off until I got all the obsessive-compulsive details right, I'm just going to put up what I have so far. So, sorry about the mess and the big gaping potholes, but please take a look anyway and find some great comics you should be reading instead of this one!

I'm afraid life is going to continue to be a bit hectic for a while longer. I'm very grateful to all of you who continue to stick around. There are about four more pages to go in this interlude; and I don't want to start with Chapter 4 until I can manage regular updates again. I'm fairly eager to get to work on it, though; it looks like it will be shorter and less suspenseful than Chapter 3, but it will have some interesting moments.

Second Interlude, pages 4 and 5

December 24th, 2006

Get over there!

Um, Merry Christmas? Has it seriously been almost a month since I last updated? That wasn't supposed to happen. ^^;; That's the problem with this “update when I can” schedule; without set deadlines I spend way too much time dithering over things like details and shading. These pages took way too long.

Also, I get kinda sentimental this time of year, and I really wanted to express how amazed and thankful I am towards everybody who has been continuing to visit and read the comic and send emails and post in the forum despite the busted old site layout and the lack of updates. But, uh… I guess I can't really express it, so here, have a crappy Christmas card instead. :P Seriously, I hope everyone has a wonderful Christmas, and for those who don't celebrate, a really great day.

You guys have sent in a lot of new fan work, but I'm afraid that will have to wait just a little longer. And I'll be out of town between Dec. 28 and Jan. 2, so the next update will probably be some time after that.

2nd Interlude, pages 1-3

November 29th, 2006

Get over there!

This interlude introduces a new character who I've been looking forward to playing with for a while. Unfortunately, said character is congenitally dramatic, and takes up three pages with one page's worth of action.

So, yeah, I'm not dead yet. Apparently a few people were a bit worried when I vanished from the site for the better part of the month. I'm really sorry about that, and I'm touched by your concern. The truth is that my life is going to be pretty hectic up until at least the end of March, so please bear with me if the updating schedule gets weird. I'll be posting the interlude for the next few weeks, and then hopefully I can start with Chapter 4 right after. Other things like the site overhaul will have to be put on the backburner for now.

Get over there!

Happy Halloween! Sorry, I lacked the inspiration to do a big “cast dressing up in costume” picture for Halloween, so I hope this doodle is acceptable instead. I'd also like to apologize to those who were hoping to see the Boy in this next Interlude; I myself was expecting to have him, but then I realized that if I put him in the way I had been planning to, it would have been too long. So the Boy will have to wait until the next Interlude, I'm afraid. This Interlude will be something rather different. ^^ It's coming along fairly well; I hope to have the first few pages up by next week.

Chapter 3, page 77

October 11th, 2006

Get over there!

Okay, better mention this first: Richard Pulfer who does the webcomic Hector has posted a short interview with me, in which I ramble on about stuff.

And so, this monster of a chapter is finally over! Which means it's HIATUS TIME, I'm afraid. I'm sorry about this, but a lot of things have been piling up which I really need to work on. A good number of these are directly related to the comic itself — for one thing, I really want to plan and write out the next couple of chapters thoroughly. With Chapter 3, my lack of planning often made it difficult to put out pages on time, since I would waste so much time agonizing about details of scenes and dialogue at the last minute. And the next chapters are looking to be even more complicated. ^^;;

I hope to start up Chapter 4 in December. Sometime between then and now, I'll be putting up the second Interlude, which I'm rather looking forward to. I'll also be updating various things on the site, as well as picking away at the site revamp. And I'll be working on that print compilation of the first 3 chapters, which I keep promising people. And… other things. To keep track of updates, there's the lj feed (which will follow all the site updates) and the mailing list over there to the left (which is just for new comic pages). In the meantime, if you're bored of all these delays, there's usually plenty of interesting activity on the forums. ^^
